Male Breast Reduction/Gynecomastia

The medical term gynecomastia literally means “woman-like breasts” which is an embarrassing condition of which some have suffered from their adolescent years. For adolescent boys, gynecomastia is caused by an imbalance of estrogen and testosterone production. The excess of these two hormones results in breast tissue that becomes dense and overdeveloped.
However, the majority of gynecomastia patients are due to obesity. Specifically, the fatty tissue in men produces more estrogen which results in overdevelopment of the male breast tissue. In some men, large breasts may be due to use of steroids or other medications. Some studies even suggest that long-term use of marijuana can cause this condition.
Whatever the cause, for boys and men with overdeveloped breasts, it is no laughing matter. More and more men are researching and electing to have surgery. The numbers of gynecomastia surgeries have increased as men look to reshape their chest to achieve a more masculine appearance. In 2011, it was the fourth most popular male surgical procedure in the United States.

Dr. Joseph Mazza and Dr. Davek Sharma talk openly with patients about their overdeveloped breasts. Most of their patients are self-conscious about it so they don’t take their shirts off or cover up at the pool or beach. Some men experienced trouble dating as they were embarrassed. Dr. Mazza and Dr. Sharma advise that no amount of diet or exercise will help the area of the breast that is overdeveloped. Since the breast tissue is glandular, losing weight won’t help. In these cases liposuction isn’t the answer. The glandular breast tissue must be surgically removed resulting in a firmer, flatter chest that is more consistent with a masculine body shape.
In terms of lifestyle factors, overweight men should lose the excess weight before proceeding with gynecomastia surgery. Also, men who take steroids and use marijuana regularly must stop using these substances. Men who are in overall good health and have adequate to good skin elasticity are good candidates for gynecomastia surgery.
MALE BREAST REDUCTION PROCEDURE AND RECOVERY
Gynecomastia surgery is performed in an outpatient surgical facility and typically takes a couple of hours to complete. Local anesthesia combined with a mild sedative can be used in some patients or general anesthesia is used. The procedure begins with incisions being made in the patient’s armpit or on the edges of the areola. Dr. Mazza and Dr. Sharma carefully remove the excess glandular tissue, trim any excess skin and close the incisions with fine sutures. For those patients with excess fat around the chest area, liposuction can be used to sculpt the chest and waist area.
A small drain might be used at the incision site to help with fluid drainage and swelling. Patients report some mild discomfort after the surgery which can be controlled with prescribed pain medication for a limited time period. Dr. Mazza and Dr. Sharma recommend that a compression garment be worn 24 hours a day for the first few weeks after surgery.
