As we age most men and women see a change in their facial appearance. Some of the changes that occur as age include the thinning of the outer layer of skin, wrinkles, drying increases and the facial skin becomes susceptible to tearing or injury. On the outer layer you will notice more pigmentation changes, such as age or liver spots, especially in areas that have been exposed to the sun. On your skin’s inner layer’s the blood vessels weaken and the supply of collagen diminishes, and the skin sags.

The aforementioned physiological factors occur naturally with the aging process but there are also other factors that affect your aging facial skin. It’s difficult to identify any one factor that causes problems with aging skin but some of the reasons include your individual genetic make-up, lifestyle choices including, smoking, sun-exposure, diet and nutrition, and your general health. These factors all effects how your skin ages.

A facelift is a highly individualized procedure that Dr. Joseph Mazza and Dr. Davek Sharma will tailor to your unique bone structure, skin texture, and underlying muscle tone. Dr. Mazza will and Dr. Sharma thoroughly discuss your aesthetic facial rejuvenation goals, conduct a thorough medical exam and recommend the appropriate surgical procedure or a combination of non-surgical skin renewing procedures.

Dr. Mazza and Dr. Sharma often recommend a facelift in combination with other facial procedures such as a forehead lift (brow lift,) eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty,) or a nose job (rhinoplasty). Also, a facelift will not improve skin texture, but can be in conjunction with procedures that do improve texture, such as chemical skin peels. A facelift is also an excellent procedure for those with excess skin hanging from the neck or jowls.

FACELIFT (RHYTIDECTOMY) PROCEDURE AND RECOVERY

Dr. Mazza and Dr. Sharma explain that they begin a facelift surgical procedure with incisions above the hairline at the temple, continuing behind the ear, and terminating behind the earlobe in the lower scalp area. The skin is then precisely separated from the underlying fat and the fat is trimmed or suctioned away selectively in order to improve the contours of the face.

Dr. Mazza or Dr. Sharma then tightens the facial muscles and gently pulls the skin back. Some excess skin may also be removed. Stitches are used to close the incisions.

Following surgery, a small tube is often placed underneath the skin in order to facilitate drainage of blood that often collects behind the ears. The tube is removed after a couple of days. Your head is also wrapped to help minimize bruising and swelling. Your face can remain somewhat swollen for several months after surgery and will gradually return to normal.

Pain medication is prescribed by Dr. Mazza and Dr. Sharma. Do not be alarmed with any facial numbness as it is expected and the sensation will disappear within a few weeks. Vigorous exercise and other strenuous activities should be avoided for at least two weeks. Alcohol, steam baths and saunas should be avoided for at least two months.

Facelift Surgery usually takes several hours to complete. For extensive and/or multiple procedures, Dr. Mazza and Dr. Sharma may schedule two separate operations.
