Liposuction is called many different things, such as lipocontouring, lipoplasty, or suction lipectomy. These terms all describe the removal of excess fat from an individual’s body. Out of the different modalities, Dr. Mazza and Dr. Sharma offer the suction assisted lipoplasty (SAL) and power assisted lipoplasty (PAL). Each of these modalities has benefits and risks that you will want to discuss with Dr. Mazza and Dr. Sharma, and they will advise you on the best option for your body shaping goals.

During your consultation with Dr. Mazza and Dr. Sharma, they will discuss your medical history, conduct a medical examination and review your body shaping goals. Patients need to be in overall good health and should be at or close to their ideal weight. If you have a significant amount of weight to lose, liposuction is not recommended.

Liposuction was introduced in the United States in the early 1980’s and is a safe procedure when performed by a skilled plastic surgeon that has the necessary surgical specialty, education and advanced training. Liposuction is a popular procedure but is also a cosmetic procedure that has one of the highest revision rates. Dr. Mazza and Dr. Sharma have seen many unhappy patients with “botched” liposuction that caused dimpling or lumpy skin and sometimes even deep depressions. These undesired results are often seen in the thigh and buttocks. Dr. Mazza and Dr. Sharma can “fix” these imperfections, but it’s always best to avoid the errors and optimize your results by selecting a board certified plastic surgeon to perform your liposuction.

LIPOSUCTION PROCEDURE AND RECOVERY

Dr. Joseph Mazza and Dr. Sharma explain to patients that liposuction involves inserting a cannula (a slim, hollow tube) into small incisions by the marked areas of the body where the excess fat is removed and the area re-contoured. The cannula is moved through the layers of tissue and extracts the necessary fat. Several techniques can be used. The “super-wet” technique injects fluid into the patient’s body, roughly the same amount as the fat to be extracted. The tumescent technique injects double or even triple the amount of fluid. The fat can then be suctioned away with a cannula.

Once the fat and tissue have been removed, Dr. Mazza and Dr. Sharma stitch the incision and trim away excess skin. Dr. Mazza and Dr. Sharma will recommend the most appropriate form of anesthesia (epidural block, intravenous sedation or a local or general anesthesia) and the outpatient surgical facility.

The length of the liposuction procedure is based on the individual needs of the patients and the area or areas that will undergo liposuction. Dr. Mazza and Dr. Sharma advise patients to expect swelling and some bruising after the procedure. You must wear a compression garment after liposuction so that swelling and bruising will be controlled and results optimized. Most patients can return to work and normal activities in a few days, but you should plan to take it easy and not over-exert yourself.
